Meet Benson and Carr, our rescued green sea turtles, in our breathtaking Underwater Ocean Tunnel. Full of personality and curiousity, they'll often come face to flipper with you to check you out!
Both Benson and Carr were victims of boat strikes, which require extraordinary care. We've given them an amazing forever home at SEA LIFE Michigan because they cannot safely return to the wild.

Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center
There are seven species of sea turtle found across the globe and nearly all of them are now classified as Endangered. While these species have existed for hundreds of years, we are facing the harsh reality that we could lose them for good. The Virginia Aquarium is dedicated to the important work of sea turtle conservation and is intimately involved in numerous efforts. We have ambassadors for three of the species and we invite you to visit and fall in love with all of them. Leave inspired to join the mission.
North Carolina Aquariums
All sea turtles are endangered or threatened. Many factors have contributed to their population decline including development on nesting beaches, plastics in the ocean and over hunting. Five of seven sea turtle species live in North Carolina waters, including the loggerhead, the green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley and leatherback.
The Aquariums are committed to sea turtle education and taking action to care for sick or stranded sea turtles. The Aquariums work with sea turtle stranding networks, nesting beach patrols and other Aquariums and sea turtle rehabilitation facilities to aid these animals.

The Florida Aquarium
The two-story, 19,000-square-foot Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center features five different rehabilitation pools, including one of the state’s deepest turtle-exclusive dive pools with an observation window. The pools range in size from 1,500 to 25,000-gallons.
The sea turtle dive pool, which reaches a depth of 11-feet, can be used to assess buoyancy issues, swim conditioning, and food trials before turtles are cleared by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to be returned to the wild. The Center includes a state-of-the-art sea turtle surgery suite.

National Aquarium, Maryland
The National Aquarium is one of more than 50 organizations around the country permitted to rehabilitate sea turtles. Experts predict a continued increase in demand for facilities and staff to rescue and release endangered sea turtles, especially amid increasing threats from climate change, which directly impacts cold-stun events. The 50 plus organizations collectively, voluntarily spend at least five million dollars each year on this work; the rising costs to support the federal government's efforts to protect sea turtles are not sustainable.

Monterey Bay Aquarium
A green turtle is always on the move. It starts life as an egg on a beach, then travels the open ocean as a hatchling. Around age 5, a juvenile green turtle heads to shallow nearshore waters to forage for sea grasses, macroalgae, jellies and other invertebrates. When a green turtle reaches adulthood around the age of 15, it develops a preference for sea grasses. As a green turtle matures, it spends its time migrating to coastal areas in search of its favorite vegan meal.

Shedd Aquarium, Chicago
Turtles all have one thing in common: the shell. Whether it’s sea turtle Nickel’s streamlined version, or the domed fortress of Amazon Rising’s yellow-footed tortoise, the bony shell, firmly fused to ribs, pelvis and shoulders, has given turtles a sturdy mobile home for about 220 million years.

When stranded turtles are reported and transported to the Aquarium, Aquarium staff assess the animal and take measures to stabilize it, with the ultimate goal of rehabilitation and release. While odds of successful rehabilitation may be low, the Aquarium will continue these efforts to save endangered species, with the hope that even one saved turtle can help species recovery.

The Maritime Aquarium, CT
Breeding populations in Florida & on Mexico’s Pacific coast are endangered. All other populations are threatened. Despite conservation agreements around the globe, the main threats remain the over-harvesting of eggs and adults, and from accidental mortality in the nets and long lines of fishing and shrimping fleets. Artificial lights confuse ocean-bound babies, causing them to lose their way. Real estate development eliminates their nesting habitat. And cast-off plastic bags, fishing line,s and other trash can suffocate, strangle or otherwise harm the animals.

Magnolia was a female Loggerhead sea turtle found stranded on a local beach, discovered by a beach walker in North Litchfield. She was quickly transported to the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston, South Carolina, where, upon initial examination by the animal care staff at the SC Aquarium Sea Turtle Hospital, Magnolia was found to be emaciated, anemic, covered in barnacles, and made little effort to move. Magnolia was given fluids, vitamins, antibiotics and her vitals were routinely checked until it was determined she was strong enough to travel. Visit

Key West Aquarium
Key West Aquarium is home to four non-releasable sea turtles: Rocky the Green sea turtle, Lola the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, Spike the Loggerhead sea turtle, and Hector the Hawksbill sea turtle. Due to the nature of their injuries and their history, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that these four sea turtles would have a better quality of life under human care than out in the ocean. All of our animals at the aquarium are under the care of world renown veterinarian, Dr. Doug Mader, including our sea turtles.
